Who ever said the sun didn't shine in January was dead wrong. In fact, this has probably been the most sun I've seen in Japan so far. Though I've missed being greeted by freshly dumped on runs, I have to admit the rays and blue skies have been amazing. With the sun has come warm days and friendly faces to share them with.
It finally happened: I escaped the village. Niseko Village that is. Don't get me wrong, our resort is the best, but it was so nice to escape to a real japanese mountain, devoid of fancy hotels and hoards of Aussies (sorry Aussie friends). After a slew of phone calls, texts and negotiating time off, ten friends from three different snowsports schools came together at the ever so charming Chisenupuri Ski Resort. With one chair and a ton of backcountry, this hidden gem of a mountain boasts freshies all day, everyday. Though the sun had made the normally fluffly snow a bit stodgy, Chisenupuri delivered on its unspoken promise, even after three straight days without snowfall.
There was definitely variety to our group, with good snowboarders and skiers from all over the world. All in all, it was an exciting trip complete with good friends, loud laughs and a near death experience thrown in for good measure.
We thoroughly enjoyed the onsen after our ski day. Slathering ourselves in mineral rich mud was amazing. Smelling like rotten eggs for a week after; not so so much.
It's good to be alive.
